Catch me in tinytinygroupshow #6: simultaneous

A while ago, Kevin Miyazaki e-mailed and asked if I’d be interested in participating in his next tinytinygroupshow. The goal: Take a picture at noon Milwaukee time (ten o’clock in the morning here in California) on Sunday, August 17. I was thrilled to be a part of one of Kevin’s tinytinygroupshows (see them all here), but it was made even better because I was participating with photofriends like Andrew Hetherington, Shawn Records, Allison V. Smith, and Amy Stein. You can see the results here. Thanks, Kevin!

New site . . . again

No disrespect to all the great Web designers out there, including the two I’ve worked with in the past, but I’ve gotten tired of having to pay someone to make minor updates to my site. My grandma always said if you can read, you can cook, and I figured cooking can’t be that far removed from Web design, so I bought a book (HTML, XHTML & CSS: Visual QuickStart Guide, 6th Edition, by Elizabeth Castro), read a couple chapters of it, and designed my own site. I’m really happy with it, and so is my wallet.

New site

I’ve got a brand-new Web site up! Check it out.

Of course, if you subscribe to my newsletter, you already know about the site. (Not a subscriber yet? Sign up here, or in the sidebar on my blog. I only send out newsletters four times a year, so don’t worry—I won’t spam you.)

P.S. Thanks to Amani Olu at Made by Brown for all his hard work! If you want a site done well and done fast, Amani’s your man.

I’m an IPA HM

Way back in the spring, I entered the International Photography Awards, and though I did check in late summer to see if I’d won (I hadn’t), I guess I neglected to look at the Honorable Mentions list. Turns out I won Honorable Mentions for three of my four entries—one in the Architecture–Buildings category and two in the Fine Art–Landscape category—for images from my South of Cota series. Pretty cool.

In case you’re curious, here are the five images (entered as a series) that won in Fine Art–Landscape:

If L.A. Weekly says it . . .

I keep meaning to mention that L.A. Weekly, the free alternative newsweekly in Los Angeles, has given Inside/Outside, my two-person show at Shotgun Space with Johanna Reed, a GO rating, which pretty much means what it says. There are listings and then there are GO listings.

If L.A. Weekly says to go, what are you waiting for? The show closes tomorrow.

Magnum blogroll

The Magnum Photos blog, adroitly run by Martin Fuchs, linked to me today, along with eighty-two others, many of whom are friends and, as Andrew would put it, inspirators. Check it out—lots and lots of good stuff there. You’re bound to find at least some sites you haven’t heard of before (unless your name is Jörg and you’ve read the entire Interweb).

Field Guide

I just received my copy of A Field Guide to the North American Family, by Garth Risk Hallberg (Mark Batty Publisher, 2007), and even if I weren’t a part of this project, I would be blown away. It’s such a beautifully done book, and I’m really honored to be a part of it. If you haven’t yet ordered a copy, click here and do. Seriously.

Hey, Hot Shot! featured me!: The sequel

Hey, I’m featured on the HHS blog again this season, and wow, check out how cool they were to me (here)! It’s true what they say: Being featured on the HHS blog and named an Honorable Mention last season was what led to my two-person show in L.A., which opens tonight. Very cool.

Competitions are tough—you never know what the judges are looking for, and you put your work out there and keep your fingers crossed. No matter what, for me at least, the act of choosing which images I want to submit, combined with going through the process of submitting them, help me figure out what I’m trying to say. Plus, I always pay attention to who the jurors are, and with HHS, you get a whole panoply of jurors instead of just one, the way most competitions are structured. In my book, it’s worth it. But the good thing is, you don’t have to enter anything you don’t want to. If HHS isn’t your thing, figure out what is and move on.

Not the 323

It’s been one of those rare Friday-night-and-Saturday combinations that counts as an entire weekend on its own—screw Sunday. Had the best meal of my life, with the love of my life, in a town I want to go back to again and again, but only with him. Even got a few pictures in the process.

Here are two from last weekend and two from this weekend. (Hint: The 323 area code is not the place I want to go back to again and again.)

P.S. My work is featured in FILE magazine this weekend. (Not sure how long it'll be on the main page, but you should be able to find me here no matter what.)

Gold mine

It’s been a busy week, and next month will be full, too: I’ll have my first show—a two-person show in Los Angeles, featuring work from my In Store series—opening on October 6; my first group show, in Detroit on October 13; and another group show, in Venice Beach on October 19 (more details to come on all three).

But even though I’m happy about all of these shows, I’m thrilled that I had a great day shooting on Thursday. I pretty much struck gold when it comes to storage facilities, and I’m happy with the results—although I plan to go back this week, rent a locker at that place (so I don’t have to keep explaining why I’m there), and take more pictures. Here are a few that I like so far.

White Wall Collective

I’ve been featured on the super-cool White Wall Collective today. Go here to check it out. And if you’re not yet aware of WWC, here’s what they have to say about themselves:
White Wall Collective, WWC, is a Detroit-based photography collective focused on the encouragement, support and nurturing of photographic talent. Recognizing a disconnect between opportunites to showcase work and the photographers, the WWC aims to unite people both in Detroit and outside of the city. Forming strong support systems, networks and a place to showcase photographs, the WWC offers a central system to present critique, information and passion for art. By keeping updated information on contests, openings and shows and other such opportunities, we can form a greatly connected group of photographers that encourage an awareness of the arts community within Detroit.

Hey, Hot Shot! featured me!

Hey, so I was featured on the Hey, Hot Shot! blog today! (Greg Wasserstrom broke the news to me in his comment on my last post. I would’ve seen it anyway—I love checking out all the work of the HHS contenders and winners—but how cool that I got the word from such a great photographer instead.)

If you don’t know about HHS, definitely check it out—and enter your own work! It’s one of the best outlets for emerging photographers. Getting your work in front of those jurors is a big deal in and of itself, and if you win, well come on. The deadline is August 7 at 11:59 p.m. (Psst! I’ve been following the HHS blog for a while now and they seem to extend the deadline every time. No guarantees they’ll do it this time, though. All the more reason to get your stuff in early.)

P.S. When I got out of bed this morning, this was what my bed looked like. Jack did not move. He was like that nearly all night. See that tiny little strip between his head and the edge of the mattress? That’s where I spent most of the night, seriously considering getting down on the floor and onto his dog bed that I paid an arm and a leg for. Where is the justice in this? Let’s not get into the fact that the first thing I did after getting out of bed was take this picture.

New

I am very pleased to announce that my Web site has undergone a tremendous overhaul, and the end result is finally on display. (Click here to see it.) Super-loud shout out to Brad Phillips, my Web designer extraordinaire, who put up with my excruciating attention to detail (I’m sure he had choicer words for it than that!) and did it all with a good sense of humor. If you’re in the market for someone who knows photography, knows design, knows Flash, and has ideas (but listens to and incorporates the ideas you bring to the table), I can’t recommend Brad highly enough.

I’ll be sending out the official e-mail announcement along with some other exciting news in the next couple days. If you’d like to be added to the list of recipients (and maybe get other similar announcements down the road when I have news to report—don’t worry, I won’t flood your inbox), send me an e-mail. (You can find a link to my e-mail address under Contact on my Web site. Oh, and did I mention how excited I am that it’s brand-spankin’-new?)

I’m in

I got wonderful news today from Garth Risk Hallberg, author of A Field Guide to the North American Family, a novella soon to be published by Mark Batty Publisher: I’m in! One of my photographs has been chosen to illustrate “Entertainment” in the print edition of the book. According to Garth, there were 700 submissions from 100 artists; the book will include 63 sections, one photo per section. I’m completely honored and thrilled to be included in this work. I’ll post more about it as I learn more (the list of contributors and such). For now, if you want to preorder a copy of the book, click here.

A great big thank-you to Shane Lavalette, whose post about this project led me to submit one of my photos in the first place, and to Garth himself, for e-mailing and requesting two more photos he’d seen on my Web site (one of which is the one chosen to appear in the book).
