This just in: JPG rejects Sally; Sally says WTF
Word just in from JPG that my photograph of Sally has not been included in the latest issue. Damn. There goes our plan to set her up outside of Borders with a little card table, a stack of magazines, and an ink pad for paw prints. When I told her, she grumbled something about the fucking magazine editors and who did they think they were.

I started to tell her she’d best get used to this kind of thing if she’s going to consort with a photographer, but before I could finish the sentence, she caught a whiff of something and was gone, raising hell with the wildlife and showing the world who’s boss. If Sally were a human, I’m confident she’d be Zoe Strauss.
I can only hope to be half as cool.

well, I feel just like sally, cause I have yet to get a photo in. after trying for over a year now, with great images. wtf? I guess I need to go shoot a nice picture of a flower.
It can be frustrating, I know, but you gotta just let that stuff roll off you. I think JPG often has some really great stuff. I thought my photo was really great, too, of course, but maybe it just didn't fit with what they were looking for this time around. Not getting published by JPG doesn't make my photo (or yours) any less wonderful.
As for taking nice pictures of flowers, you should only take those if that's what you want to photograph. It's so easy to set a goal (like, I'm going to get published in JPG, or I'm going to be named a Hey, Hot Shot!) and then be tempted to change something about yourself or your work if you don't reach that goal (whether right away or after a year of trying). You should only change your work if that change is part of your vision, not to try to please some magazine or panel of judges.
Okay, I'll step down off my rah-rah soapbox now. Hang in there, and keep taking pictures as long as it's fun and exciting for you.
I think Sally looks great in this shot, Liz.
Did anybody get pixies of her mound excavations?
Your work is very cool, and I'm tickled you share it here, and otherwhere.
John
P.S. I'm waitin' for JPG to snaggle my mater sammich picture, cause I already have lots of pretty flowers. :)
Thanks, John. This shot is actually Sally upon hearing the news. The one I entered for consideration by JPG is at http://jpgmag.com/photos/171627. I have more pictures of Sally than just about anything else, I think. She's a natural in front of the camera.
Very cool paws, Liz.
Thanks for the linkage,
John
